We are who we are. Thomas is a working-class graduate student out of place among the impassioned hippies like Esther, but when she quits her factory job as WWII ends, he decides to stick it out on their subsistence farm, trying to prove he has what it takes to be a world class chef in a cutthroat culinary city, even if she's landed a dream role in an international TV series. When she destroys all the music she ever wrote for him, and he burns all the novels he wrote for her, will they still be in love?
